School Tools supply drives to benefit local low-income school children

Rancho Cucamonga, CA (July 27, 2007) – Inland Empire United Way (IEUW) is working with local partners Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Victoria Gardens to host School Tools Supply Drives to collect new school supplies for local low-income school children.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and United Way are hosting a “Stuff the Truck” Supply Drive on Friday, August 10 at the Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga. While fans attend the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes vs. Inland Empire 66ers game, they are encouraged to bring a donation of new school supplies to help kids in need. AM 1510 will be reporting from the “SPA Community Curiser” live throughout the event. There will be fireworks after the game. While game time is 7:05 p.m., game attendees are invited to drop off donations starting at 6 p.m. Game tickets can be purchased at the Epicenter or online at www.rcquakes.com.

Victoria Gardens and the Inland Empire United Way will partner to host a “Stuff the Van” School Tools Supply Drive on Saturday, August 11 from Noon to 5 p.m. at Victoria Gardens’ Chaffey Town Square.

“Victoria Gardens and the Inland Empire United Way are partnering together to make this school year the best one yet with plenty of supplies for students in our local schools,” said Glenn C. Miller, Director of Marketing for Victoria Gardens. “Each year, devoted teachers choose to spend about $1,000 of their own money to purchase basic supplies for their students. We are asking the community to donate new school supplies, primarily “The Basic 10” items, which include pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue (stick and bottles), spiral notebooks, loose-leaf paper, scissors, colored pencils and erasers.”

The first 200 guests to donate at least five items from “The Basic 10” in a single donation will receive a $15 gift certificate to Rock Mountain Chocolate Factory. Guests at the event will also enjoy family-friendly entertainment including K-FROG 95.1 FM Radio. Ontario Dodge will provide the van in which School Tools supplies will be stuffed.

“Inland Empire United Way is excited for the upcoming supply drives to kick off the start of the school year,” said Lorraine Ousley, KidSmart Director at Inland Empire United Way. “All of the donated supplies will benefit low-income children and classrooms. Please visit our website if your company or organization is interested in supporting low-income children by hosting a supply drive or other event.”

The School Tools Supply Drives will benefit the Inland Empire United Way’s KidSmart initiative, which improves the lives of underprivileged children ensuring they come to school well fed, ready to learn and equipped with the necessary tools to learn. More than half of the students in San Bernardino County public schools are enrolled in the federal free and reduced meal programs.

The School Tools program provides low-income children with new school supplies, giving them an opportunity to learn and succeed. The School Tools Teacher Resource Center (TRC) invites teachers from select schools to receive supplies for their students and classrooms, free of charge. During the 2006-07 school year, 388 teachers visited the School Tools TRC, and nearly $200,000 worth of new school supplies were distributed to 11,600 students.
