Local volunteers encouraged to sign up on www.HandsOnInlandEmpire.org

San Bernardino County, CA (October 26, 2007) – Local citizens wanting to give their help are encouraged to sign up on Inland Empire United Way’s www.HandsOnInlandEmpire.org volunteer website and join the "Wildfires 2007 Response Team" to be added to the mailing list for volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the fires.

Inland Empire United Way’s Hands On Initiative is sending out daily updates to this mailing list to keep people informed on the current fire situation and volunteer needs. At the present time, volunteers are encouraged to be patient. The desire of volunteers to serve is appreciated. Once real, immediate needs are identified, Hands On Inland Empire will make volunteer opportunities available.

If your organization or group is in need of volunteers for disaster-related needs, Hands On Inland Empire has volunteers waiting to be dispatched. Contact Larry Deckel at ldeckel@ieuw.org or (909) 980-2857 ext. 208.

Residents can donate cash to the San Bernardino County Fire Recover Fund to ensure that families and individuals most-affected by the Slide and Grass Valley Fires will receive assistance needed to continue their lives. Cash donations can be made on www.ieuw.org. This assistance may provide help with housing and food, counseling, transportation and supplies necessary to make temporary living quarters a home. Funds donated are fully tax-deductible and will be distributed quickly; no administrative charge will be taken.

Another way to help in your community is to tell people about the 2-1-1 service. Dial 2-1-1 or (888) 435-7565 for information on current fire emergencies and referrals for assistance.

Inland Empire United Way (IEUW) helps disadvantaged kids succeed in school, provides easy access to health and social services, develops volunteer opportunities to create positive change, and strengthens financial stability opportunities for low-income families and individuals.
