In Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day -
Students gather on January 15 and 16 in recognition
Pomona, CA (January 8, 2008) – In recognition of Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day, Pomona High School (PHS) will be holding
two events for their students, closed to the public.
On Tuesday, January 15, about 15 PHS students will be painting a
mobile mural that will incorporate themes of service learning,
civic engagement and nonviolence. The mural will stay on Pomona
Unified School District (PUSD) school grounds and be a backdrop
for school events.
Wednesday, January 16, students at PHS (475 Bangor St., Pomona,
CA 91767) will have an assembly to recognize Martin Luther King,
Jr. Day. The agenda is as follows:
- Tyrone Montgomery, former Raiders running back to speak on
gang prevention (noon)
- Reveal the mural (12:20 p.m.)
- Discussion sessions led by PHS students addressing service
learning, civic engagement and nonviolence. (following the
unveiling)
- Workshop that includes resume building, interview skills
and college applications for the students - put on by Cal Poly
Pomona and PUSD Service Learning Dept. (around 2 p.m.)
This Martin Luther King, Jr. project is a collaboration between
Hands On Inland Empire, a program of Inland Empire United Way,
and Pomona Unified School District with support from the
zerohour. Zerohour is a program of the LA County Human Relations
Commission that attempts to decrease discrimination and hate
crimes.
