United Way Day of Action 2009 Will Be a “Week” of Action

A call-to-action for the Inland Empire to LIVE UNITED

 

Rancho Cucamonga, CA (June 5, 2009) - United Ways across the country will make a call-to-action as a nationwide “Day of Action” engaging our communities to LIVE UNITED – GIVE, ADVOCATE and VOLUNTEER on issues focused on EDUCATION, INCOME or HEALTH.

Inland Empire United Way will focus on EDUCATION, specifically childhood literacy, and the theme for 2009 is “Read to Succeed!” The goal is to help children and youth achieve their full potential by promoting a solid foundation of literacy and a love of reading.

In the Inland Empire, the United Way Day of Action 2009 will be a “Week” of Action… From Monday, June 15 to Sunday, June 21 with a kick-off project on Saturday, June 13. Week of Action 2009 will encourage the Inland Empire to LIVE UNITED in multiple ways:

GIVE.
Book Drive
When:   Everyday from Monday, June 15 to Friday, June 19
Time:    Between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Where: Inland Empire United Way / School Tools Teacher Resource Center (TRC)
9624 Hermosa Avenue, Rancho Cucamonga, CA 91730
What:   Drop-off books to help disadvantaged kids in our community succeed! Note: Only NEW books can be accepted.

ADVOCATE.
Book Set Distribution
When:   Thursday, June 18 and Friday, June 19
Where: Elementary Schools in the Ontario-Montclair School District, Fontana School District and Redlands Unified School District
What:   Hello Kitty/Target backpacks provided by Target will be used to hold a set of 5 American Girl Books. With Target invited to help with the distribution, the libraries of each elementary school will receive book sets.

Reach Out and Read
When:   Everyday starting Monday, June 15 and ending mid-August
What:   Children in the community are encouraged to read throughout the summer by logging the book title and minutes they read each day. Children who submit their summer reading log accompanied by a drawing of their favorite story will be recognized.

Early Childhood Literacy Programs
When:   Available 24-hours, 7-days a week

VOLUNTEER.
First Book Distribution Event
When:   Tuesday, June 16 and Wednesday, June 17
Where: Inland Empire United Way / School Tools Teacher Resource Center (TRC)

What:   First Book has partnered with United Way to host one of up to 30 book distribution events across the U.S. to distribute more than 260,000 assorted Disney books! Make a difference and volunteer!

Read to Kids! (Our Week of Action 2009 KICK-OFF project)
When:   Saturday, June 13, 2009
Where: Virginia Primrose Elementary School
751 N. Maple Avenue, Fontana, CA 92336
What:   Read aloud to elementary students, engage the children in discussion and arts & crafts activities and share your passion for reading. Each child who attends receives a free book!

 

For the Week of Action 2009, each volunteer signed-up for First Book Helpers and/or Read to Kids will receive a free LIVE UNITED t-shirt! Space is limited. Sign-up today!
